Round and Round WordPress theme released

(Are you tired of hearing about this theme yet?) Well, it’s been released, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens! I ended up changing it to display best on 1024×768 and put instructions in the Stylesheet for an easy switch to 800×600 in case there were those who would need that based on their readership. Thanks to Cory Miller for helping this newbie out with the release.

The only real issue is that the Theme Viewer displays the transparent areas as an icky gray color. It’s really unfortunate, because a lot of people will pass it right by, thinking, “ewww, who would design a theme like that?” But, there’s nothing I can do about it. Thanks again for everyone’s input and help!

    Great work!!! I love it.

    Thanks Char!

  3. I like it. I think that you seem to notice the warts more than others would.

On another topic, I still find that enough people use 800 x 600 that it’s worth making things easy to use for them. In this case you can’t go with what most people have because the penalty is bad usability (horizontal scroll) for them (vs less pleasant design for an 11XX monitor viewing a 800×600 design). I say never sacrifice usability for appearance.

  4. Randa says:

I totally agree. It all depends on your readers as to what resolution you want to go with.

Great Layout! I think you’ll get a lot of downloads. It’s clean and very professional.

I’ve read before that a good rule of thumb when deciding on your site width is never infuriate more than 8% of your readership. So if 8% or more of your visitors use 800×600, then you should design with that in mind…

If on the other hand, like my site, less than 1% of the visitors use 800×600, I don’t have any problems designing for the next level up exclusively…

That’s definitely a winner, I bet you’ll get plenty of downloads!

Good luck with the theme. I’m curious, did you start off with the wordpress generator you mentioned in your post “design your own wordpress theme in minutes” and build it around that?

  9. Randa says:

Thanks Tara. Yes, I did start with the WordPress generator since I knew it validated and worked across browsers. All the CSS and some of the PHP was dumped out/changed – my theme doesn’t bear any resemblance to what it was when I started. It was just a framework to work within.

@Chris – 8% sounds like a good rule of thumb, thanks for sharing that.

  10. Hello. I just stumbled upon your blog and I have enjoyed reading it. I’m about to start my own blog and I can use the info you have here. Keep up the great work! How did you initially get your readers?

  11. Well done on getting it finished Randa!

I’m on my way to check out that older post of yours that mentions the generator. I need a little kick-start.

  12. Randa says:

Thanks David. The generator did take some time cleaning up and adjusting, but it was a decent place to start. The crazy thing is that it called some outside CSS files straight from his site. Don’t understand why he would have set it up that way, but after dumping everything out the framework was still decent.

Good work. You’re going to get lots of downloads. It seems like I went through hundreds of themes before I settled on one, and yours is definitely unique. Thanks for sharing the talent.

Definately a nice debut Randa. I never thought about using the theme viewer to build around…it’s a good idea, just to give one some structure to begin with.

    Hey!
Hands Down! That’s a clean and user friendly design!!
but take care, there is a couple of javascript errors!

  17. Randa says:

That’s strange, since there is no Javascript in the code…. do you know what could be causing the errors you’re seeing?

  18. Hot diggity dog, she finally releases it! Nice work Randa – I will warn you… you have opened the floodgates now. Addiction begins, must design WordPress themes… Ask Cory, he knows what I’m talking about! :)

Congrats Randa. It’s just the beginning to more great themes… oops, you getting busier now :) Those circles and polka dots are so playful and happy! I’m starting a photo blog… you think it’s appropriate for it?

  20. Randa says:

@ Doris – Sure, it would be great for it!

  23. Jaynee says:

LOVE the theme – would like to use it for my website, and did have it turned on for part of the day, but then I realized that my secondary pages, which have tables with pictures, were not showing up. They show up fine in my blog posts, but not on the pages within tables.

    Any ideas on a fix?

  24. Randa Clay says:

Jaynee- Glad you like the theme! Are you saying that the pages are not showing up in the menu or that the pages just don’t work?

  25. Jaynee says:

Some pages work fine. However, the pages that have TABLES with LINKED IMAGES are not working. Those images are not showing up – even though when I hover my mouse over them the mouse reflect the links. If I know a time that you will visit the site to see it, I can activate the theme and let you look when it’s live.

You can email me at theoriginaljaynee at gmail dot com if you would like, for me to do that.

  26. Jaynee says:

Let me add, this is in IE6 that the pictures don’t show up. The pictures show up fine in Opera. I went ahead and activated the theme at my site so you can see it.

I love the orange graphics on the left side.
