The I Follow “Movement”
Published April 11th, 2007 in Blogging.I decided I’d like to have something in my sidebar indicating to my future readers that I’ve turned off the nofollow in my comments, and I thought others might be interested as well. So, I’ve set up a page that has the little logo you see to the right in several different colors and some CSS code that would work well if you weren’t interested in a graphic. What do you think? I think if you Digg this post, we could spread the “movement” to more than just the small (but growing) list of bloggers who are already on board*:
- Wendy Piersall of eMoms at Home
- David Airey of Creative Design
- Ben Yoskovitz of Instigator Blog
- Dawud Miracle at dmiracle.com
- Chris Cree of SuccessCREEations
- Char of Essential Keystroke
- Chris Garrett of chrisg.com
- Andy Beard of AndyBeard.eu
- David Paul Robinson of davidpaulrobinson.com
- Lars-Christian of Lars-Christian.com
- Char also of Casual Keystrokes
- Michelle of Scribbit
- Ponn Sabra of Empower Women Now
- Jason of Webomatica

- Mario of mariosalexandrou.com

- Aaron Potts of Today is That Day
- Heather of Home Ec 101
- Laura Spencer of Writing Thoughts

*Naturally, this list is too large to be kept up to date as to who has continued to follow comments.

Love it Randa! Did you create the logo? It is perfect.
Yes! I created it this morning. Thanks!
This is great. Thanks Randa. I’m picking it up and will write a post about it.
Great! Thanks Dawud.
Great stuff, Randa.
Thanks for spreading the link love!
Most excellent. I placed your logo under my comments field for a single post page rather than in the sidebar.
Add me to the list as well, I installed the “Do-Follow plugin nearly 2 months ago.
Hi Randa!
Thanks for the link-love
Great little logo…I’ll definitely work it in (as best I can). Techie-I-am-not, and I just learned how to put images on this week. I see you worked out a dark-pink and black one–was that one specifically for me!? hee hee.
Peace.
HI Randa!
Got it up…woo hoo! In my post and right underneath my “Recent Comments” Category. It matches perfectly
Looks great! Glad I made one that worked well with your site!
I like it, Randa. Good stuff. I’ll help you get the word out.
Thanks! I will put it up on my blog pronto!
awesome, thanx for letting me know about this Randa, i will put that i-follow badge on my site this week-end, when i launch my new design
Dugg! And I was happy to do it, too. I have had the DoFollow plug in installed on my blog for months, and I believe that everyone should do the same.
The blogosphere is a community, so let’s make sure that the community thrives!
Big props to you for putting this together, Randa!
Excellent! Thanks for the icon. I will be adding it at LifeIsRisky.Com
Lovely Logos! Thanks for visiting Dummies Guide to Google Blogger Beta. The Do-Follow Hack for Blogspot is at :
Remove Nofollow Attribute on Comments
Great logo - the orange one looks like it was built for my blog.
Now how come I don’t see it in your sidebar? Hmmm?
Chris: Are you wearing your glasses? It’s at the top in the left sidebar.
I’m so appreciative of everyone’s visits and comments!
Oh ho! I had to switch to Firefox to see it. I was in IE7 earlier — it doesn’t show up in that browser. How odd.
Excellent idea and I love the graphic. My site has officially joined the iFollow movement! Lets hope a lot of people follow all of our leads and start dropping the NoFollow attributes…
I just turned off the nofollow on my blog. I’m going to put one of your logo there!
Hello!
Great idea, I appreciate it. I totally agree with you.
You can put me on your list, if you want to.
Regards,
René

Chris- thanks for letting me know that. I threw that on there so quickly yesterday that I forgot a >. Firefox forgave me, but IE didn’t!
Randa, what an excellent logo! I’ve been looking for something like this ever since installing DoFollow. I’ve blogged about my support here:
http://www.u-g-h.com/index.php/2007/04/12/the-i-follow-movement/
Stumbles, Dugg and signed up to your RSS
Great Idea Randa
Keep up the good work
Hi Randa… great logo - I FOLLOW!!
I’m on board! Great idea
http://www.utterlygeek.com/2007/04/12/i-follow-movement/
Great idea! Writing up a post and adding to both blogs now!
I have installed a Do Follow Plugin, and I plan on putting one of your buttons on my site…
though I turned on my “highlight no follow links” option, and at least half of the comments on this page are displaying as no follow links…
Right - that’s because I’ve set the plugin to remove “nofollow” after the comment has been there at least 1 day. That allows me to moderate and remove spam comments as needed before the links are followed.
Ahh, that makes sense!
Thanks for clarifying… I was wondering how half could be and the other half weren’t!
I added you as my add to the Do-Follow bloggers list-
http://homebizblogger.com/2007/04/12/do-follow-blogger-list/
Cool! I’ll post the list soon!
Great! I was already using the DoFollow-plugin en have now added the logo to my sidebar at http://www.marketingland.nl
Hiya,
Great stuff here! I’ve been using Do Follow on both my WP blogs (www.blogforpeace.org and http://www.bloggingindia.net) and I’ll add this button later today
Thanks a lot for starting this
I’ve Dugg the post to show my appreciation
Cheers,
Mohan
I do follow! I grabbed the logo!
Thanks Randa, I’ve grabbed the logo and now I do follow too!
Fantastic!! I’ve just written an article talking about what a wonderful thing this is for the web, and pointing back here after telling people why this is morally urgent. ( http://alexandersarchive.blogspot.com/2007/04/i-follow-movement-democracy-on-web.html ) Can you tell me how to set Blogger up to follow links so I can participate?
Ok…it would appear that I ought to join the bandwagon too. I’ll have to get this sorted soon.
I Followed! Thanks for the cool badge.
Great idea, great badge, thanks
I implemented DoFollow just a few mins ago!
Thanks.
Kenneth
I think this is a great idea, not that I don’t see the merits in nofollow - but it is not a “silver bullet” and should only be used on untrusted links. Hence my 24hrs period when all new links have nofollow applied (long enough for me to check for obvious spam!)
Anyways I’ve been using dofollow for some time now and think this is a great way to educate people about why they should not be using nofollow on all links (abd wikipedia setting such an awfull example!) So I’ve added the button to my site as well as doing a quick write up
http://foobr.co.uk/2007/04/i_follow_do_you/
I also wrote a quick javascript function which might be of interest to you. You could think about offering something similar so that people can just drop in a script tag and have it display a random colored logo and a link. You cna view the js at: http://foobr.co.uk/ifollow.js
We’ve always felt that if you build our community by providing a relevant comment that we should share the link love.
I got mine added too. Nice choice of colors by the way
Please add me to the list.
I took your logo from another blog (before I found out about this blog) and I was wondering why multiple blogs had different colored ones, so I thought we were supposed to change th color.
I changed it to black and white for my D List but it didn’t really turn out well
It still links back to you but if you only want the originals used, I’ll just pick another color.
But if you could make a black and white version, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I’ll stick with the one I have
Ok! Check it out- I made a white one.
Hi Randa,
any chance you could put the pdf/ai/eps or whatever source file you are using for the logos so people can adjust the colors to suit their site?
I currently rotate through all the different colors on mine randomly - but would be nice to be able to add a few of my own to the mix
Oh and if you could add me to the list that’d be great!
I have been using a similar plugin for a few weeks now. Good to see I’m not the only one that think nofollow will not work
Hi I’ve also removed my NoFollow from my blog and have used your logo. Thanks for creating them in many colors
I’ve joined! I put it on my personal blog and also on http://www.hitechpink.com. Thanks! Cool logo by the way.
I follow!
This is such a perfect idea:) This will have a huge impact on the blog community!
I’m looking forward to the extra links, and this will do wonders for comments:)
Thanks again for the info, and keep up the great work!
*I will bribe to be put on that list!!!* :p
Ryan- you are in luck, because I just happen to be accepting bribes at the moment! I’ll let you decide what the appropriate amount is.
Its in the sidebar on my homepage Randa, good work
p.s hey randa, maybe its a moderation thing, but um..my comment is nofollowed, as are a few of those above me, were you aware of that?
Hey this is a great idea. I really think it is catching on. I have just recently added the DoFollow plugin to my site.
So how come I’m not in the list?
Bob -now you are!
Rob - that’s because I’ve set the plugin to remove “nofollow” after the comment has been there at least 1 day. That allows me to moderate and remove spam comments as needed before the links are followed.
Hi! I’m so sorry but I’m entirely clueless on how to put your badge on my blogs. All 6 are already dofollow and I have the text announcements posted but your badge would really look great on them. Could you tell me how to do it please? Thank you so much. (I love the orange one.)
Duh - silly me, thanks for clearing that up! I hadn’t looked at that plugin in any depth -
Can this be done on the regular blogger accounts? Like the one in this link? I can’t find the words follow.
HomeMom3 - There is a link to instructions on how to do this on Blogger on my I Follow page: http://randaclay.com/blog/i-follow/ (end of the third paragraph)
Manila Mom - You can right click on the badge you want and choose “save image as” and save it to your computer. Then upload it to wherever you host your images (Photobucket, Flickr, etc.). Then go into your blogger account and put the URL of the image in the sidebar item you want to add it to. The URL of the image will start something like
Thanks for your interest!
Hi, I disable nofollow on my site & would love to be added to the list!
I would also love to be added on the list
If you need real names, it’s B.J.
(you can go right ahead and laugh at the acronym
)
Great campaign! I’ve added it to the comments area on each of my posts with a link back to this page. Let the links flow naturally!
Bah humbug. I don’t follow.
Could I also be added to this list? TY!!
Thanks for setting this up, Randa! I (re)added the plugin and put up the logo a couple of days ago… things seem to be working great!
Nice! Although I did join up to a similar movement mentioned here I think that it is great that so many bloggers are pulling together to make certain that comments get followed.
I have taken the no follow out of my blogger template. But I am having difficulty putting the do follow button on my site. It always shows up corrupted, so that you can’t really make out the words. I’m not sure why. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi Randa! I’m a Filipino and would love to support the cause for “I Follow”… it’s a great thing to have! I’d also like to be part of this cause! Cheers!
hello there. i just started my blog a few days ago, but read this and turned off the nofollow comment, and put up the logo on my blog. hopefully more people will know about this soon!
Very nice little graphic. a smaller one might be nice too…chicklet style?
Eric
Nice idea Eric- I will see about making some.
Hi, Randa,
Great initiative. I made a smaller one for my own blog, and decided to make it in a couple of other colours for those who thinks yours is too big.
http://www.asgeirhoem.no/2007/04/lets-all-follow/
Those look great Eric!
Hey Randa,
Found your site through http://www.fuzzyfuture.com
I’ll try removing nofollow from one of my blogs and see if it affects my rankings in any way, I don’t want to be wrong. If everything is OK, I’ll move to my main blog.
Thanks.
ooh. can i also be added to the list?
Hey, set it up on my blog, actually had the plugin for a few weeks but never knew there was a movement about it
thanks randa!
