Bits and pieces
Published June 17th, 2007 in Blogging. The blog metaphor group writing project wrapped up recently, and it turns out my post was one of the top 10! What a nice surprise! Turns out everyone in the top 10 will get a free copy of Lorelle’s new book. I’m looking forward to reading it.
Paul Enderson tagged me for the 8 things you don’t know about me meme, and that seems like a good lazy Sunday afternoon thing to write about, so here goes:
- I love sad songs and sad movies. The sadder and more pathetic, the better. Think Sophie’s Choice or Whiskey Lullaby.
- Contrast that to the fact that I can find a silver lining in almost anything. I believe that no matter how negative something seems, you can always find something good about it.
- I studied Italian in Rome for a month in my mid-20’s.
- I can spin a pen around my thumb. I learned to do it in a boring high school English class, and have distracted and frustrated college professors, co-workers and piano students with the trick ever since. I can even do both hands at once. I believe it to be an essential life skill.
- I turned 37 a couple of days ago. 40 is just around the corner! Unbelievable.
- I am a Grammar and Spelling Nazi. However, I value an easy to read, conversational style of writing, so I’m able to let go of my pet peeves, even in my own writing if necessary.
- I was born in Texas, and even though my dad was in the Army, I managed to spend much of my life there before moving to Ohio in my 20’s. I still think Texas is the best state in the US, but it’s just too hot in the summer for me to want to actually live there again.
- My first web site was on Geocities, a long, long time ago, and was called “The Mewsings of Opera Cat” - how lame is that?
Great web design is one part art and one part science. Help you child get the math help and technology knowhow that they need! If you help your child learn today it could mean helpful college grants down the road. Most learning activities are simple kids games that use basic math!

Spinning a pen around your thumb? Who would have thought that such a delightful pastime would have a tutorial video on YouTube! I’m off to practice in a minute!
But before I do that, I should let you know that I was curious about number 8 - so I dug this up:

LOL! Thanks for joining in…
Oh dear… it’s even lamer than I remember! That singing cat was my first “illustration”.
I’ll let you off - after all, a designer’s skill can improve drastically in 8 years!
I am a Texas girl by birth, too - I even went to UT at Austin for a year of college. Congrats on winning the book! That project was fantastic.
LOL - I started out in Geocities and at one point had 25 sites there. I am truly addicted
Another grammar nazi here too.
People: stop using the possessive to indicate the plural! Jeesh
I just finished tweaking your Bluebird theme - will post there now.
Thanks!
Your first site is a joy to behold! I’m surprised I was visitor number 0000 since 1997 though.
Paul tagged me too so I’ll see what I can conjure in the next few days.
@Ingrid - the extra apostrophes drive me crazy too! You even see people make that error in printed material and signage. It’s crazy!
@David - a “joy to behold” - that’s an interesting way to put it. Boy, those were the dark ages huh?
My first site was launched three years ago, so you’ve a fair bit of experience over me.
Congrats!
I read Lorelle’s book, and it’s great! Got it at Sobcon07 last month in Chicago
Hi Randa,
I thought you were talented before, but now that I read you can spin pens on BOTH thumbs I am very impressed (and jealous)! Also thought it was interesting that the related post to this one is “Secrets to Productivity”.
On a slightly unrelated note, thank you very much for including me in your “worth reading” list. I did a redner (that’s what we in Ireland say when we’re embarrased and blush) when I saw my site listed. It is very much appreciated.
Jennifer
@Jennifer - actually the pen spinning thing is a great “thinking” activity. Some people think more clearly when listening to Bach or Mozart… I think more clearly when I’m spinning my pen!
Your site has already given me some great tips - I hope you get at least a little traffic from my site as well.
I wanted to thank you for the “U Comment, I Follow” css. I just put it on my blog, and linked it back to you.
And… I like “The Mewsings of Opera Cat”!
Hi Randa,
This probably isn’t the best place to post this comment, but I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I am relatively new in the blogosphere (about 4 months) and I intend to make an event blog, dedicated to a conference I am organizing. Do you have any advice on how build it and how to promote it? Or perhaps some useful resources? I’ve tried Google, but didn’t find very much info.
Thanks,
Mihaela
