10 ways to make sure I never come back to your blog…ever

Jan 27

I’ve been doing LOTS of blog reading lately, and I really enjoy reading good content in a well-designed blog. However, there are several things that make it easy for me to decide never to come back:

  1. Put blinky ads on the blog. Anywhere. For that matter, fill up all blank space on the screen with ads, so that I have a hard time even finding your content.
  2. Constantly rant about all that is wrong in the world, and use lots of profanity while you’re at it.
  3. Make the majority of your posts “Pay per post” articles.
  4. Write often about how to make money with links to get rich quick schemes that are obviously too good to be true.
  5. Misspell lots of words, and use numbers 4 words wherever possible.
  6. Make your text teeny tiny, so that I have to work really hard to read it.
  7. Don’t test your blog design in Firefox, so that everything looks funky when I load your page.
  8. Space out your posts by several weeks, so that I doubt whether I’ll see any new content if I were to visit again in a couple of days.
  9. Don’t moderate your comments, so that there’s lots of spam when I go to view them.
  10. Don’t customize your blog at all. Use a default template so that your blog looks just like every other blogger who can’t take the time to learn how to change the header at least.

[edit, 1/29: ok. #10 is a bit snotty sounding isn’t it… and it’s not true actually. In hindsight, I was trying to get to 10 and that blanket statement is a bit small-minded. The kernel of truth in it is that I really appreciate blogs that have a bit of the personality of the writer in the design of the blog. That doesn’t necessarily make it a better blog- you can have a great design and nothing to say. It’s just the designer in me talking. Apologies to anyone I’ve offended.]
This list doesn’t apply to people whose purpose for their blog is simply to share pictures and anecdotes with family and friends. I’m talking to the people who would really like to increase their blog traffic and feel they have meaningful content to share with the world.

By the way, if you’d like to change your blog header, I will do an original design for you for only $25. Send me an e-mail: randa [at] randaclay [dot] com.

  1. Oh my goodness! Great minds do think alike! We did do different posts on the same topic! Except your post has more ideas than mine. I especially like your #5 and I almost put poor grammar and spelling in my list.

I love reading your blog… you’re humor about everything cracks me up and most days I need it!

  3. I prefer to let the stupid comments stay, for the whole world to see the idiots mentality, except for vulgarity or profanity.I have a very busy life, which doesn’t include enough time to spend a lot of time customizing the area in which I wish to express an opinion.I actually like opera browser much better, after I got used to it.I wish mozilla and opera could combine their efforts, and microsoft would stop locking their browser to the OS.NPUBLICI Del
