I’m getting sorta bad about taking and posting pictures of the boys. I don’t know what happened to me. But, I did manage to get them to the photographer again this year for their annual “professional” pictures.

Jack turns 6

The boys get a party every other birthday, and this was Jack’s year to invite some kids over. He wanted a treasure hunt party, so we had some clues and they had to figure them out and run around the house to find the next one to finally get to the treasure. He had a treasure chest pinata and a Mommy-made cake (my first attempt at cake decorating in a while). A good time was had by all.

Jack has entered the Star Wars phase of life, which is fun, since we get to watch those hokey movies again and Mark pulled out the X-Wing fighter and remote controlled R2D2 he played with as a kid. He’s lots of fun to do school with (when he’s in the mood that is) because he’s interested in everything. He continues to be high-energy, challenging, mischievous, goofy, cautious and outgoing. Life is never boring with Jack around.

Bluebonnets

We’ve lived in Texas 3 years now, and this is the first time we’ve taken pictures of the boys in a bluebonnet field. The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas, and getting your kids out in a field at some point in the Spring is sort of obligatory around here.

Keeping Up

It’s been so pathetically long since I posted here. I hate to let it go too long because this is sort of an archive that I think it will be fun for the boys to look back at when they’re older. Also when I can’t remember anything that happened when they were this age, I’ll be able to look over the pictures and read about all they were doing and have a big boohoo about them being so big and how I miss when they were little… well, that’s what everyone tells me I’ll do. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Not long after I last wrote, we went to Ohio for about a month while Mark was out of town on business. We had a great time, and the boys especially enjoyed playing with Emily and Benjamin and meeting their new cousin Aron.

Jack is still plugging along with his schoolwork and taking on more chores at home. David has become a big boy overnight it seems. Just in the last month he’s begun to sit through church and is potty trained!!! I feel like I’ve passed a milestone, having moved the changing table into my closet, and spent my last Sundays in the nursery.

Honestly though, I AM going to miss this. I’m going to miss their little hands in mine, hearing them laugh together while they play, their funny quotes… I’m trying to enjoy every minute and am so grateful to God for giving them to us.

We got some hand-me-downs from Mark’s brother recently, among which were some nice dress clothes and a few ties. Jack enjoyed wearing a dress shirt a tie like Daddy to church this morning.

Jack has become interested in making his own meals, and on nights when I don’t have anything specific planned for dinner, I’ve been giving him the freedom to choose whatever he wants to make. I thought he’d choose chips, hot dogs, etc., but the first meal he made, he chose leftover meatloaf, broccoli and pinto beans! He’s proud to be able to do for himself (for the most part) and wants to cook for everyone else too. I’m crossing my fingers that he’s got Mark’s savant-like gift for cooking.

We enjoyed a much anticipated visit with Mommaw, Aunt Neva, Aunt Laura, Emily & Benjamin in early September. Jack and Emily had a great time playing, telling nonsense jokes to each other and laughing hysterically, playing hide & seek and driving their cars around the patio.

Jack is doing gymnastics again, this time as part of our homeschool group, and he LOVES it. It’s so good for my little uncoordinated boy, and he’s definitely getting better at watching the instructor and following instructions.

I started doing a little piano with him, and though he’s not old enough for us to get too serious about it, he is interested and has enjoyed learning so far. It’s difficult to find time to do piano though, because David wants to come and play along!

I let Jack wash a bunch of plastic cups and plates the other day, and he had the best time. He declared, “Mommy, you won’t ever have to wash dishes again. I’m going to do it for you from now on!” I just wanted to record that statement for him to read when he’s 14…

He’s discovered that showers are more fun than baths and feels like a big boy washing his own hair. He’s still enjoying schoolwork, but really dislikes working on handwriting. I’ve found that he enjoys writing little letters to people, and doesn’t find practicing handwriting nearly as onerous if he gets to put it in an envelope and mail it to someone when he’s finished. Anyone want a letter from Jack? :)
