I decided I’d like to have something in my sidebar indicating to my future readers that I’ve turned off the nofollow in my comments, and I thought others might be interested as well. So, I’ve set up a page that has the little logo you see to the right in several different colors and some CSS code that would work well if you weren’t interested in a graphic. What do you think? I think if you Digg this post, we could spread the “movement” to more than just the small (but growing) list of bloggers who are already on board*:

Most excellent. I placed your logo under my comments field for a single post page rather than in the sidebar.
Add me to the list as well, I installed the “Do-Follow plugin nearly 2 months ago.

Hi Randa!
Thanks for the link-love
Great little logo…I’ll definitely work it in (as best I can). Techie-I-am-not, and I just learned how to put images on this week. I see you worked out a dark-pink and black one–was that one specifically for me!? hee hee.
Peace.

Now how come I don’t see it in your sidebar? Hmmm?
April 11, 2007 9:30 pm
Chris: Are you wearing your glasses? It’s at the top in the left sidebar.
I’m so appreciative of everyone’s visits and comments!
April 11, 2007 10:12 pm
Oh ho! I had to switch to Firefox to see it. I was in IE7 earlier — it doesn’t show up in that browser. How odd.

though I turned on my “highlight no follow links” option, and at least half of the comments on this page are displaying as no follow links…
April 12, 2007 2:29 pm
Right - that’s because I’ve set the plugin to remove “nofollow” after the comment has been there at least 1 day. That allows me to moderate and remove spam comments as needed before the links are followed.

April 15, 2007 6:09 pm
I think this is a great idea, not that I don’t see the merits in nofollow - but it is not a “silver bullet” and should only be used on untrusted links. Hence my 24hrs period when all new links have nofollow applied (long enough for me to check for obvious spam!)
Anyways I’ve been using dofollow for some time now and think this is a great way to educate people about why they should not be using nofollow on all links (abd wikipedia setting such an awfull example!) So I’ve added the button to my site as well as doing a quick write up
http://foobr.co.uk/2007/04/i_follow_do_you/
I also wrote a quick javascript function which might be of interest to you. You could think about offering something similar so that people can just drop in a script tag and have it display a random colored logo and a link. You cna view the js at: http://foobr.co.uk/ifollow.js

I took your logo from another blog (before I found out about this blog) and I was wondering why multiple blogs had different colored ones, so I thought we were supposed to change th color.
I changed it to black and white for my D List but it didn’t really turn out well
It still links back to you but if you only want the originals used, I’ll just pick another color.
But if you could make a black and white version, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I’ll stick with the one I have
April 16, 2007 8:35 pm
Ok! Check it out- I made a white one.
April 17, 2007 3:00 am
Hi Randa,
any chance you could put the pdf/ai/eps or whatever source file you are using for the logos so people can adjust the colors to suit their site?
I currently rotate through all the different colors on mine randomly - but would be nice to be able to add a few of my own to the mix
Oh and if you could add me to the list that’d be great!

[...] The I-Follow Movement stems from the idea that people who post regularly and intelligently to weblogs should be rewarded for their posts with a followable link. Since the people that post here for the most part are reasonably intelligent people with clean websites, I have elected to take the rel=”nofollow” attribute off of the comments section. If I don’t like a link or feel it is unsuitable or unsafe (the two major reasons why I won’t like a link), I can always go in, edit the post and remove the offending link. It takes about 10 seconds, and I have only had to do this a few times so far (mostly because of one random idiot who doesn’t seem to know when to shut up.) [...]

I saw your logo on someone’s site a few days ago and started reading about the whole ‘nofollow’ fiasco. So, your movement is working
I’m a new blogger - just installed a no-no-follow plugin and added the orange/black version of your graphic to my comments area (for example: http://www.modestopinions.com/2007/05/09/review-top-10-signs-youre-addicted-to-wootcom/#respond )

I noticed that some people are using the graphic on their blogs but not actually following links…
I assume this is through possibly misunderstanding the concept, or due to the confusing interface/options in some platforms like blogger…
Still though, a bit of an issue - quick call the blog police

@ Frank - while it is possible that some have implemented the plugin/fix incorrectly, the other possibility to consider is that they have set the plugin so that comments will be followed after they have been there several days (the time frame can be set to whatever you want) so that they have time to moderate comments before they are “followed”. There would be very little benefit to someone doing it on purpose.

I hedged my bets so to speak, and installed a plugin that allows you to clear the nofollow based on the number of posts someone has made in the past. I have it set at zero so all comments get the nofollow stripped, but if I ever see a need to put a restriction in place at least I’ll have the option *shrug*

Thanks Randa! I now have my DoFollow plugin and my sweet looking YCIF .gif! I appreciate you taking the time to create the images and share!

[...] 5) The DO-Follow Movement - A lot of people don't know it, but many blogs prevent search engines from finding your blog or your website after you post a comment on their blog. It's called a no-follow reference, and it is a total outrage to people who participate in online discussions. A number of people (including Today is that Day) have banded together to start a DO-Follow Movement. Check out the details and some of the thought leaders at Essential Keystrokes, MomGadget, and Randa Clay Design. [...]

Hello,
I have recently installed the plug-in unto my blog and I’m fixing some things on the theme to make sure that everyone else who would like to comment would benefit from these. Also, thank you for this nice and favorable idea of yours.

I just installed the DoFollow plugin myself and used your logo in my post, although I have yet to add the logo in a permanent location.
I love this movement and am happy to have joined in an effort to return the favor to the readers of my blog. Thanks for making the logos!

U Comment, I Follow: Dofollow Wordpress Plugin…
After learning more about it I’ve decided to remove the NoFollow attribute from all comment posters here at Inner88. WordPress, by default, uses a NoFollow attribute that basically tells Google and other search engines not to follow a link when…

I rather like the idea of us following each other around!
I can’t even imagine anyone standing in the way of such a thing! Thank you for starting this movement. Your post has been Dugg from here… because it’s for real and has significance!

Sounds like a good idea, but I think that a Web 2.0 style logo would be the tip of the iceberg for this movement! I wonder whether that could be arranged?
